Zamfara State Police Command has rescued 25 residents abducted during an attack on Kuraje village in the Damba area of Gusau Local Government Area.
In a statement on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said the police received a distress call on Friday at about 9:45 pm reporting that armed bandits in large numbers stormed the community and abducted 10 women and 15 children.
DSP Abubakar said joint patrol teams from the Damba Division, the Department of Operations in Gusau and the Community Protection Guards (CPG) moved to the scene after receiving the report.
He said the teams confirmed the incident, pursued the fleeing bandits and engaged them.
“Upon receiving the report, joint police patrol teams and the CPG moved to the scene, confirmed the incident, pursued the fleeing bandits, and engaged them in a coordinated and strategic operation,” Abubakar said.
According to him, all 25 victims were rescued and taken to Sabongari Damba for safety and profiling before being reunited with their families.
The Commissioner of Police in Zamfara, Ibrahim Maikaba, commended the operatives and restated the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property in the state.
The incident occurred amid reports of recent abductions in parts of the country.
These include the kidnapping of 25 schoolgirls at Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, Kebbi State, on November 17; the attack on Christ Apostolic Church, Eruku, Kwara State, on November 18 and the abduction of 303 pupils and 12 teachers from St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, Niger State, on November 21.
