A police officer attached to the Special Protection Unit (SPU), Abia State Command, has allegedly killed a man, Christian Onuoha, in Afara community, Okwulaga Afara-Ukwu, Ibeku, Umuahia, Abia State.

The 23-year-old victim was said to have been shot twice after an argument ensued between him and the officer identified as Collins Akpugo.

As of Tuesday morning, residents of the community including youths had begun protesting the alleged killing at the Central Police Station, Umuahia.

A women leader from the community, Ngozi Ogbonna, told journalists that the victim was shot in front of his father’s compound on Monday night.

Mrs Ogbonna said Onuoha was with other youths from the community when the policeman drove towards them in a Toyota Hilux van.

She said the victim asked the policeman to dim his vehicle light when he drove towards them.

An argument ensued between them, prompting the policeman to fire at the young man.

Abia police spokesperson, Geoffrey Ogbonna, has confirmed the incident.

Mr Ogbonna said the commissioner of police had “ordered a thorough investigation into what happened, though the CP has sent a delegation to commiserate with the family and community of the deceased.”
