Nigerian-American actress Pepi Sonuga has expressed her admiration for actress Sola Sobowale, author Chimamanda Adichie and Afrobeats star Runtown.
The 31-year-old stars as Elaine White in Tyler Perry’s film The Six Triple Eight now streaming on Netflix.
Others in the ensemble cast include Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian, Oprah Winfrey and Dean Norris.
Speaking in a Netflix short video titled Naija Faves with Pepi Sonuga, the former Miss Teen Los Angeles delved into her cultural roots and revealed some of her favourite things.
Speaking about her love for music, Pepi recounted her first encounter with Runtown’s hit song ‘Mad Over You’.
She explained that the track became a favourite in 2016, especially after seeing Runtown perform it live at her cousin’s wedding in Lagos.
“In 2016, I was in Lagos, and the energy was crazy. Everywhere you went, ‘Mad Over You’ was playing. I was so in love with the song.
“Then, at my cousin’s wedding, Runtown performed it live. It felt like a scene out of Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. I just love Afrobeats,” she said.
Pepi also praised Kemi Adetiba’s King of Boys as her favourite Nigerian series on Netflix, applauding Sola Sobowale’s performance as Eniola Salami.
“My favourite Naija show on Netflix is King of Boys. Sola Sobowale is just a star. She’s amazing.
“I love watching mature women get their flowers because it reassures me that this myth about Hollywood being ageist is a lie,” she said.
On literature, the actress declared Adichie her favourite Nigerian author, admiring her storytelling prowess and emotional depth.
“Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a queen. I love her words and the way she expresses emotion.
“Sometimes, I read her books and think, ‘That’s exactly how I feel.’ She’s simply amazing,” Pepi stated.
The Six Triple Eight tells the inspiring true story of the first and only all-Black, all-female US Women’s Army Corps unit deployed overseas during World War II.
It’s currently the number one movie on Netflix in Nigeria.
