Outrage as DStv kicks off 7.5% VAT from June 1

Nigerians have reacted with disapproval to the planned 7.5 per cent increase of Value Added Tax (VAT) in the services of Multichoice Group, operators of DStv and GOtv.

The satellite TV provider on Thursday sent messages to its subscribers informing them of the planned increase.

“Dear GOgetter, please be informed that effective 1 June 2020, we will implement 7.5% VAT on all GOtv services. Visit www.gotvafrica.com to see your new pricing,” the message sent to GOtv subscribers read.

“Dear customer, please be informed that effective 1 June 2020, we will implement 7.5% VAT on all DStv services. Visit http://dstvafrica.com to see your new pricing,” the message to DStv subscribers read.

The company had said it could not shoulder the 2.5% percent increase in VAT (from 5 per cent to 7.5 per cent) which was made legal following the signing of the 2019 finance bill by President Muhammadu Buhari.
