Ondo govt seals Shoprite over environmental violation

Ondo State Waste Management Authority has sealed off Shoprite complex along Igbatoro road in Akure, the state capital.

Officials of the agency also closed NEPA neighbourhood market in Akure. Both of them were sealed on Monday for allegedly violating environmental law.

The development came barely a week after four commercial buildings were sealed by the government for a similar offence.

Confirming the development, general manager of the agency Ayo Adeyemo said the affected buildings were penalised for running foul of sanitation rules of the state.

According to her, indiscriminate dumping of waste has been identified as the fundamental problem facing sanitation in the capital city. To this end, she declared that violators would not go unpunished.

She said, “Surveillance has been set up to arrest and prosecute erring members of the public.”

Adeyemo however enjoined residents to complement the efforts of the government in protecting the environment against indiscriminate disposal of waste.
