Olympics: Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, who washed jersey in viral video, loses in men’s shot put

Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has lost in the final of men’s shot put at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Ranked among the top 12 in the event before the games, Enekwechi made history on Tuesday when he became the first Nigerian to qualify for the final of the shot put event.

However, on Thursday, he finished 12th after throwing 19.74m on his third attempt. He fouled in his first attempt, and on his second, he threw 18.87m.

The athlete was seen in a viral video 24 hours before the game washing the jersey for his shot put final.

The video had the caption, “When you made the Olympic Finals, but you only have one jersey.”

Meanwhile, world record-holder Ryan Crouser bettered his own Olympic mark as he retained the men’s shot put title.

The American managed a best of 23.30 metres on his sixth and final effort, a new Olympic record after his five previous attempts had also all gone beyond the 22.52m that saw him win gold at the 2016 Rio Games.

His teammate and world champion Joe Kovacs took silver with 22.65m, while New Zealand’s Tomas Walsh claimed bronze (22.47).
