Igwe Alex Nwokedi a former chief press secretary to ex-military ruler Olusegun Obasanjo has passed on aged 84.

According to the Uthoko Na Eze royal family, the Uthoko of Achalla died after a brief illness.

Nwokedi was also briefly the chief press secretary to former President Shehu Shagari.

In a statement, the family described him as a charismatic journalist and distinguished civil servant who served his country faithfully and conscientiously before ascending the throne of his forefathers.

He had worked with the National Electricity Power Authority (NEPA) and the Nigeria National Petroluem Corporation (NNPC).

Nwokedi was also a board member at the United Bank for Africa (UBA) and the Anambra Broadcasting Service.

The cricket enthusiast was conferred with the distinguished merit of Officer of the Order of Niger (OON).

He was the chairman, Anambra State Council of Traditional Rulers and also the chairman, Nine Eastern States Council of Traditional Rulers.
