This comes amidst tension over xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa and the reprisal attacks on facilities owned by South Africans in Nigeria.

Sources quoted by Punchng.com said Emeka received a phone call before meeting up with his suspected killers in Brakpan, east of Johannesburg, who killed him and went away with his car.

The area where the incident occurred is said to be dominated by whites.

One of the sources referred to the deceased as “one of those Joburg (Johannesburg) boys” and added that Emeka used to work in Lagos before he moved to South Africa.

President of the Nigerian Union South Africa, Adetola Olubajo, confirmed the death but ruled out any connection with the xenophobic attacks.

“It’s not connected to xenophobia; we don’t want this to raise tension,” Mr Olubajo was quoted saying.
