How Nigerian players fared on Premier League opening day

Nigerian players were on parade on Saturday as the 2016/17 Premier League season finally kicked off.

Ahmed Musa made his debut for Leicester City in the first game of the new Premiership campaign.

The defending champions slipped to a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Hull City at the KCOM Stadium with Musa featuring for the entire duration.

Adama Diomande and Robert Snodgrass scored either side of Riyad Mahrez’s penalty to win it for the Tigers.

But Leicester’s record signing, Musa showed his lightning pace in the game – beating Jake Livermore down the left on one occasion before setting up Jamie Vardy who miss-timed his cut back.

The former Kano Pillars man was again involved as he latched onto a loose ball in the final third and once more played the ball into Vardy’s part but the England forward blazed the ball over the bar.

At St. Mary’s Stadium, Odion Ighalo, kitted for Watford in their 2-2 draw with Southampton.

Ighalo, 27, who recently signed a new five-year deal with the Hornets failed to replicate the feat of last season in which he scored in the league opener.

The forward notched his first Premier League goal in the 1-1 draw at Everton but one year after, it was Etienne Capoue who got the goal for Walter Mazzarri’s side.

Whereas compatriot, Isaac Success wasn’t even dressed for Watford – missing the encounter due to injury.

The striker joined the Hornets for a club-record record ÂŁ12.5 million from Granada during the summer.

Meanwhile, Kelechi Iheanacho only featured for 10 minutes as Pep Guardiola began his Manchester City reign with a 2-1 victory against Sunderland.

Iheanacho, who notched 12 goals last term, replaced Gael Clichy and was involved in the build-up that led to Patrick McNair’s own goal.

Sergio Aguero opened the scoring for the Citizens through a penalty in the fourth minute.
