Nigerian man pleads guilty to killing girlfriend in London

Oluwaseyi Dada

A Nigerian, Oluwaseyi Dada, has pleaded guilty to killing his 17-year-old girlfriend, Katrina Makunova, in Camberwell, South London.

The 21-year-old pleaded guilty on Wednesday in an Old Bailey Court.

Social media communications between Mr Dada and Ms Makunova were obtained by police from the victim’s mobile phone.

Both parties had threatened and insulted each other, and had a physical fight on July 12, 2018, when Katrina went to the lobby of a block of flats on Brisbane Street where Dada lived.

It was gathered that Makunova, who was carrying a knife in her handbag, was pierced by the knife when she fell on the bag during her struggle with Dada.

The prosecutor, Brett Weaver, said there was a “background of animosity” in the relationship and the couple had “made threats and insulted each other via social media.”

Dada told police he thought Makunova was about to attack him and she fell to the floor when he grabbed her handbag.

“He then told them the deceased fell onto the 17cm blade,” the prosecutor said.

Mr Weaver continued: “She then said: ‘What the hell are you doing with a knife’.”

Police officers, who were called to the scene of the incident, were said to have found Dada administering CPR to Makunova.

London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance were also at the scene.

Makunova was pronounced dead at the scene despite paramedics effort.

Dada was subsequently charged with manslaughter on July 13.

A post mortem examination taken on July 14 gave cause of her death as a single stab wound.

He will be sentenced on January 29.
