Nigerian man dies in South African police custody

A 28-year-old Nigerian, Victor Ude, has died in a police cell in Cape Town, South Africa.

South Africa’s police watchdog, Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday.

IPID said Ude died on Wednesday and that the police had commenced investigation on his death.

IPID’s spokesperson, Moses Dlamini, said Ude was reportedly arrested for an altercation with his former girlfriend.

The spokesperson also revealed that the police said the lady accused Ude of drug abuse.

Upon his arrest and detention at the police station in Lwandle area of Cape Town, Ude was found hanging by his sweater after midday.
