Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has confirmed that a Nigerian is being detained in Dubai for presenting fake documents.

A Twitter user known as @omokehinde had tweeted on Monday saying the Dubai police arrested Obinna Chibuzor after he tried to use his friend’s passport to return to Nigeria because his own passport had expired.

The man claimed that Mr Chibuzor has heart problems and is being denied medical care in detention.

“He’s committed a criminal offence and at such he should be punished. But, allow him to see a doctor and not just give him pain relief drugs. This is a plea to the Dubai Police,” he wrote.

Mrs Dabiri-Erewa replied saying the Nigeria mission in Dubai had taken up the issue.

“Taken up by our mission. Confirmed that he has been in detention since 23rd Jan for presenting fake documents. Consular officer will visit him tomorrow,” she wrote.

“We will investigate further and continue to demand the right of our citizens to fair hearing.”

She, however, said the police have denied refusing Chibuzor medical attention.

NIDCOM also replied the man’s tweet, saying it had reached out to Chibuzor’s wife.

“…Kindly note that we are communicating with his wife @mummyJ53812086 and we have contacted our mission in Dubai and awaiting a response…,” it said.
