Nigerian-born public official Nwachinemere Kalu-Agba has been re-elected as Deputy Mayor (Mayor Pro Tem) of the City of Orangeburg, South Carolina, United States.
His re-election was announced on Sunday in a Facebook post by his brother, Peter Agba-Kalu.
The post read, “Join me to celebrate my senior brother Nwachinemere Kalu-Agba who was re-elected as the Deputy Mayor for the City of Orangeburg, USA for the next two years that will end in 2027.”
Mr Kalu-Agba serves as a member of the Orangeburg City Council and holds a four-year council mandate that is due to end in 2027.
He will serve as Deputy Mayor for a two-year term that runs to 2027 while continuing his city council duties.
Local reporting and the city directory show he previously held the Mayor Pro Tem role, stepped down when a new state law required the two-year tenure and a break in immediate re-election and returned to the post after his successor’s tenure elapsed.
The law sets a two-year term for the Mayor Pro Tem and bars immediate re-election until after another cycle.
The Municipal Association of South Carolina lists Agba-Kalu among Orangeburg councilmembers and reports he completed the Municipal Elected Officials Institute of Government, a training program for municipal officials.
City records list Kalu-Agba as a member of the Orangeburg City Council and include him in the city directory of elected officials.
His council role gives him a vote on council matters and a public contact listed by the city.
Nwachinemere Kalu-Agba’s current council term ends in 2027, at which point he may decide whether to seek re-election to the council or other local office.
