Red Star Belgrade has announced the death of a Nigerian basketball player Michael Ojo during a training session in the Serbian capital on Friday.

Ojo who previously played for Red Star Belgrade is believed to have suffered a heart attack, according to local media.

The club said in a statement: “The sudden and shocking death of Michael Ojo has deeply affected everyone — players, coaches and the management of a club that accepted him from the first day, and that he considered his own.”

EuroLeague also extended condolences to Ojo’s family, teammates, coaches, “and many fans who enjoyed his performances”.

The 2.16-metres tall centre who made his debut for the Nigerian male team D’Tigers in 2018 played for Florida State University in the US.

Unselected at the NBA draft in 2017, Ojo moved to Europe and signed with Belgrade’s FMP, then transferred to Red Star in 2019.

The Lagos-born player’s contract expired in June, but he remained in the Serbian capital until the unfortunate incident.
