Music was my first love, not comedy – Basketmouth

Basketmouth

Comedian Bright Okpocha popularly known as Basketmouth has stated that music was his first love before he ventured into comedy.

The 43-year-old said this on Instagram on Friday.

According to him, he had to take a break from music because the timing was not right.

“Most people do not know this but music was my first love, then TV before comedy. I had to do it backwards as the timing wasn’t right & I hadn’t met a producer that can see music the way I see it……in its true form & color,” he wrote.

Basketmouth recently released a single ‘Trouble’ which features 2face and Blaqbonez.

Basketmouth discovered his passion for music in 1994. He then formed a group called Da Psychophats which had seven members and they started going for shows and rapping in 1995.

The group, however, broke up before releasing any material. He went on to form another rap group known as Da Oddz with his brother Godwin and Muyiwa Ola-Phillips: they performed a couple of shows but didn’t break through.

In 2014, the comedian launched his record label Barons World Entertainment.

In 2020 he released a highlife album titled Yabasi which served as the soundtrack for his TV series Papa Benji.

The album features artists like Ladipoe, BOJ, The Cavemen, Bez, Waje, Duncan Mighty, Flavour and Phyno.
