Man, 70, docked for alleged manslaughter

A 70-year-old man, Muyideen Alani, was on Monday arraigned in an Ota Magistrates’ Court for alleged manslaughter.

Alani of no fixed address is facing a two-count charge bordering on reckless driving which resulted in the death of one Mohammed Lawan.

The prosecutor, Insp. Abdulkareem Mustapha told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Feb. 27, at about 8.10 a. m. at Tempo Bus-Stop, Obasanjo Farm area, Ota.

Mustapha alleged that the defendant recklessly drove a tipper, marked KTU 703 XV, on the highway, resulting in the death of 28-year-old Lawan.

According to him, the offences contravened Sections 5 and 13(1) of the Federal Highway Act Cap 135, Revised Laws of Ogun, 2006.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Matthew Akinyemi, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Akiinyemi said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed.

The case was adjourned until May 3 for hearing.
