LUTH denies rejecting coronavirus patient

Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) has denied a report indicating that it turned back a patient who tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19).

In a tweet on Friday, the hospital denied that such happened, saying it is not a treatment centre for the disease.

“Although this story appears to be concocted, there is a need to put things in proper perspective,” the tweet read.

“LUTH is presently not a treatment centre for COVID-19. The protocol demands that all confirmed cases are referred to Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH), Yaba.

“Long queue in LUTH waiting to be tested for Coronavirus is a figment of the imagination of the writer. There is no such thing happening in LUTH.

“We, therefore, appeal to the general public to disregard the story. We urge them to stay safe during this trying period and obey government directives on COVID-19 pandemic.”

The report claimed that a man named Emmanuel Benson, who had close contact with two persons that recently arrived Lagos from the United Kingdom, was told to go home by medical personnel at LUTH, after testing positive for the coronavirus.

It also alleged that Mr Benson was tested at the government-owned hospital on March 21 and was asked to go back home over lack of bed space to admit him at the facility.
