Twenty-three persons have now been confirmed dead in the petrol tanker fire explosion on Wednesday at Felele along the Lokoja-Abuja Highway.

It was gathered that the tanker belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) experienced brake failure around 8 am which resulted in the accident.

The tanker fell on five cars, two motorcycles and three tricycles popularly known as Keke, killing all occupants.

Qed.ng had earlier that 10 persons died including a primary school student.

The latest count places the casualty figure at 23.

Five students of Kogi State Polytechnic and three nursery school pupils were among those burnt beyond recognition.

It was gathered that a businessman identified simply as Samson, his wife and three children died in the fire.

Officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived at the scene around 10 am.

FRSC sector commander Idris Ali confirmed the casualty figure, adding that one child escaped with injuries.
