Actress Mercy Johnson has slammed Ghanaian television station Blazing TV for airing her movie The Firstborn without her permission.
In an Instagram post on Saturday, the 40-year-old expressed shock that the station broadcast her movie without securing the necessary rights or consent.
“GHANA, BLAZING TV. How is this even ok? BLAZING TV in Ghana is showing my movie, THE FIRSTBORN, on their TV without my consent. How does this even make sense? How?” she wrote.
She captioned the post: “I am speechless at the audacity of it all…”
Earlier this year, actress Bimbo Ademoye accused a Ghanaian channel of broadcasting her film without permission. She called on Ghana’s Minister of Communications to intervene and warned stations to stop exploiting Nigerian creatives.
Juliet Ibrahim, a Ghanaian actress with strong Nollywood ties, had also condemned the trend.
Ruth Kadiri and Omoni Oboli have also voiced similar frustrations, citing intellectual property theft and loss of revenue..
Reacting to the growing number of complaints, the Ghana National Film Authority (NFA) in June issued a directive reminding stations to secure proper authorisation before airing any films. The agency warned that failure to do so could lead to civil and criminal consequences.
