LASU alumna Aminat Yusuf named 2026 Rhodes Scholar for West Africa

LASU best ever first-class graduate Aminat Yusuf

Lagos State University (LASU) has announced that its alumna Aminat Yusuf has been selected as the 2026 Rhodes Scholar for West Africa.

Miss Yusuf graduated from LASU’s Faculty of Law with a perfect 5.0 CGPA, becoming the first student in the institution’s history to attain the record.

She was recognised as the best-graduating student at the university’s 26th convocation ceremony.

After graduation, Yusuf joined the law firm Olaniwun Ajayi LP, where she works as an associate in dispute resolution and project finance.

Her selection as a Rhodes Scholar followed a five-stage process.

She placed first in the final stage of the interviews.

The award offers her a fully funded two-year programme at the University of Oxford beginning in September 2026.

The Rhodes Scholarship, established in 1903, is known as the world’s oldest international postgraduate scholarship programme.

It supports young leaders who demonstrate academic ability and public service.

LASU vice-chancellor Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello congratulated Yusuf and said the development was significant for the university, Lagos State, Nigeria and West Africa.

Yusuf, an indigene of Edo State, was previously offered automatic employment by the Edo State Government.

She also received N10 million from Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for graduating with a perfect CGPA in Law.
