The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced an 18% fare increase across all services under its Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) scheme.
In a statement released on Thursday via its official social media platforms, LAMATA cited the rising cost of operations as the reason for the fare adjustment, which takes effect on Monday.
“Please be informed that there will be an 18 per cent increase in the bus fare on all Bus Reform Initiative scheme,” the statement read. “The fare rise is because of the increase in the cost of operations and the need to ensure that buses keep running and guarantee your movement around Lagos.
“We seek your understanding and cooperation.”
The statement did not clarify whether the fare hike would affect LAMATA’s train services, which include the Blue Line and Red Line introduced by the Lagos State Government.
This development follows the Lagos State Government’s decision in November 2023 to discontinue the 50% transport fare discount on BRT services. That discount had been introduced in August 2023 as part of measures to cushion the economic impact of the removal of fuel subsidies by the federal government.
