Kanu, Okocha, Amokachi to feature in African Legends Gala Match in Abuja

Nwankwo Kanu

Former Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu has confirmed that he will feature in the African Legends United Gala Match scheduled for March 28 in Abuja.

Kanu said he will play alongside Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, Daniel Amokachi, Finidi George and other former African internationals.

He disclosed this on Thursday on the sidelines of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Festival in Abuja.

The former Arsenal and Inter Milan forward said the match is aimed at promoting African culture and supporting grassroots development across the continent.

“It’s happening in Nigeria and the legends are going to be there. We are involved in this project because we want to promote the culture of Africa and empower the grassroots,” Kanu said.

He said the players agreed to take part in the match to inspire young Africans and promote unity.

“It’s legends because we are giving back. That is why we all agreed to be involved. Myself, Jay Jay Okocha, Daniel Amokachi and others will participate in the match on March 28,” he added.

Former Cameroon international Eyong Enoh said the AfCFTA Festival will hold from March 26 to March 28, with the gala match taking place on the final day at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Enoh said the match and other festival activities were designed to encourage unity among African countries, noting that divisions on the continent were largely created during the colonial period.

He said the festival was meant to promote cooperation and integration among Africans through sports, culture and economic initiatives.

According to Enoh, the AfCFTA Festival seeks to support the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area by promoting collaboration, shared identity and economic participation across the continent.

The festival will also feature startup exhibitions, cultural displays and other activities aimed at showcasing African innovation, heritage and enterprise.
