Arthur Nzeribe dies at 83

Senator Arthur Nzeribe has passed on at the age of 83 in a foreign hospital following an undisclosed ailment.

“He died this (Sunday) morning in a hospital abroad. The family will soon release a statement,” a source told Sahara Reporters.

Nzeribe was elected a senator to represent Orlu, Imo State in 1999 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Nzeribe appeared in a viral photo in 2017 with medics around him. Reacting to the photo, the former lawmaker said he was “hale and hearty and not struck by stroke, as being suggested in some quarters.”

In November 2002, then-Senate President Anyim Pius suspended him indefinitely over alleged N22 million fraud.

In April 2006, the Orlu People’s Consultative Assembly, sponsored by then-governor of Imo Achike Udenwa, staged what it called “One million March” to drum up support for Nzeribe’s recall from the Senate. In the December 2006 PDP primaries for the 2007 senatorial candidates, Nzeribe was defeated by Osita Izunaso.
