With the Euro 2016 quarter final match between Germany and Italy doomed to end in a draw, Azzurri manager, Antonio Conte, threw on Simone Zaza just before the end of extra time.
The Juventus forward was brought in as a guaranteed penalty taker and his only touch of the ball came during the spot kicks.
He went for a bizarre tippy-toe run up to put Manuel Neuer off, but it was an awful failure as he blasted his kick high and wide.
Italy went on to lose the shoot-out 6-5 as Germany made the semi-finals for the chance to take on the winners of Sunday night’s France versus Iceland clash.
Zaza wasn’t the only man to miss a penalty, but the manner his introduction into the match backfired took the shine off the others.
