Italian who first tested positive for coronavirus in Nigeria now negative

Lagos state health commissioner Prof Akin Abayomi

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, says the Italian who imported coronavirus to Nigeria has tested negative for the virus.

Speaking on Thursday at a media briefing, Abayomi said the 44-year-old would undergo more tests before a decision will be made on his release.

“The index case is now negative. The only reason he is still with us is because he needs two negative tests but he is ready and anxious to go,” he said.

The Italian arrived Nigeria from Milan, Italy, on February 24. He visited Ogun State the following day.

He had been receiving treatment at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos.
