No fewer than 13 soldiers have been killed in an ambush by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), two army sources told AFP on Monday.

A military convoy, which was headed for a military base at Buni Yadi, 20 kilometres from Damaturu, Yobe State capital, was hit by rocket-propelled grenades and heavy gunfire on Saturday.

Several soldiers were injured in the attack.

“We lost 13 soldiers in this ambush and several were injured,” an officer said.

The second source said: “It was a fierce battle and the terrorists also suffered casualties.”

‌ISWAP split from Boko Haram in 2016 and rose to become a dominant group.
