Islamiyat Yusuf wins another weightlifting medal for Nigeria at Commonwealth Games

Islamiyat Yusuf on Monday secured the bronze medal for Team Nigeria in the Women’s 64kg event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The 19-year-old had a total lift of 212KG to finish third behind Maude Charron of Canada and Cochrane Sarah of Australia who finished in first and second positions respectively.

While Charron who set a new Games Record had a combined lift of 231KG,  the 216KG combined lift earned by Cochrane was good enough for the Silver medal 

Monday’s bronze medal is the fourth medal for Nigeria in the weightlifting event where the country had earlier won two gold and another bronze medal.

All Nigeria’s medals so far have come from weightlifting.

The first came on Saturday when 23-year-old Adijat Olarinoye set a new Commonwealth Games record with a combined lift of 203kg.

Edidiong Umoafia clinched the bronze medal in the men’s 67kg weightlifting event on Sunday to bag Nigeria’s second medal.

Umoafia lifted a combined 290kg to get on the podium.

Rafiatu Lawal also won the gold medal in the women’s 59kg weightlifting category on Sunday.

Lawal created a new Commonwealth Games record by lifting a combined total of 206kg.
