Imo: Okorocha’s son-in-law, Nwosu kicks against Ihedioha’s election

Uche Nwosu

Uche Nwosu, son-in-law to Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has kicked against the election of Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as governor of the state.

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) returning officer, Prof. Francis Otonta, announced the final results at the election collation centre in Owerri, the state capital on Tuesday.

Ihedioha, a former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives,  won in 11 of the 27 Local Government Area, polling a total 273,404 votes to defeat his closest contender, Nwosu, of the Action Alliance (AA) who won in 10 LGAs and scored 190,364 votes.

Addressing journalists on Tuesday, Nwosu alleged that Ihedioha did not meet the mandatory 25 percent vote spread in at least two-third of the number of LGAs where election was held.

Nwosu said, “The constitution is clear that for a candidate to be declared a winner, he must have the mandatory 25 percent spread in at least two-thirds of the number of local government areas in the state.

“In this instance, the candidate of PDP did not meet the requirement as he scored the mandatory spread in only 12, whereas it should be 18.”

He also alleged widespread irregularity in three local government areas – Aboh Mbaise, Ahiazu and Ezinihitte.

“This result is totally unacceptable and I’m calling on INEC to declare the election inconclusive and arrange a fresh election within seven days as stipulated by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Nwosu said.
