Ighalo’s strike ends Watford’s winless streak

Nigeria striker, Odion Ighalo, scored his first goal of 2016 to help Watford beat struggling Newcastle United 2-1 on Saturday at Vicarage Road.

Quique Sanchez Flores’ team had failed to win in their previous four games – their last was a 3-0 win over Liverpool in December.

The 26-year-old benefited from a beautiful link-up play from strike partner, Troy Deeney, to put the Hornets in front within a minute of second-half restart.

Skipper Deeney dinked a ball between two defenders to Ighalo who graciously collected and rounded Rob Elliot for his seventh goal in seven games.

The goal was the former Granada striker’s 14th of the season – three away from equalling the record goal scored by a Nigerian in the Barclays Premier League held by Yakubu Aiyegbeni.

Craig Cathcart doubled the home side’s lead shortly before the hour mark while Jamaal Lascelles pulled one back for the visitors.

The three points lifts Watford back into the top half of the Premier League, while Newcastle remain in the relegation zone after their fourth straight defeat away from home.
