I wear Nigerian designs to make political statement – Chimamanda Adichie

Award-winning novelist and feminist icon, Chimamanda Adichie, has revealed that she wears Nigerian fashion designs to make a political statement.

Chimamanda is known to wear Nigerian designs as she has continued to use her Instagram account to showcase her love for Nigerian fashion brands.

In an interview with i-D, a British magazine focused on fashion, style, and contemporary culture,  the Half a Yellow Sun author said she wears Nigerian designs because she believes the fashion industry in the country is full of talent.

“I decided to use fashion as a kind of political statement,” Chimamanda reveals, “which is to say that I made the choice to wear mostly Nigerian designers to public events, because obviously, I want to support an industry that’s full of talent, but also to make a case for how fashion can tell a story. Fashion and culture are intertwined in very interesting ways.”

Chimamanda received an honorary degree from the prestigious Duke University in Durham, North Carolina America last month.

The 40-year-old was among the few individuals who received the honorary degree from the university and they were all described as “people making changes in the world in very extensive ways.”
