Actress Shaffy Bello has shared why she chose to undergo a permanent form of birth control many years ago.
In a conversation about motherhood on her YouTube channel, the 55-year-old said she decided to tie her tubes because she did not want to have a large family. The procedure she referred to is a surgical method to permanently block the fallopian tubes and prevent pregnancy, commonly known as tubal ligation.
According to Shaffy, she made the decision about 26 years ago after deciding she did not want many children.
She said her former husband wanted them to have more children, but she stood by her choice.
“My ex-husband had to beg me to have another one. I didn’t want a lot of children. I wanted to stop,” she said.
Shaffy described how the procedure was done.
“So they went through my navel, went in there, did what they needed to do, and they tied it up. That was it. They closed my eggs,” she said.
She added that she always knew the size of the family she wanted and did not feel pressured to change her mind.
The actress also joked that if she were to become pregnant again after the procedure, she would consider it a special event.
“I’ve always said to myself that after tying my tubes, if I get pregnant, I will feel like Mary, it’s a holy child,” Shaffy said.
Shaffy is an actress and singer who grew up partly in the United States before returning to Nigeria to pursue her acting career. She first gained recognition after appearing in a music video in the late 1990s and has since featured in numerous Nollywood films and television series.
In earlier interviews, she also spoke about the personal cost of building her acting career. She once revealed that she left her husband and teenage children in the United States to pursue opportunities in Nollywood in Nigeria. The decision later contributed to the end of the marriage.
