I could afford eating a lot so I ate until I became overweight — Doyin Okupe

Physician and politician Doyin Okupe has revealed that he gained a lot of weight because of overeating.

The 72-year-old told PUNCH in an interview published on Saturday that he started gaining weight after getting married in 1977, adding that he weighed over 147kg.

“Oh yes, it’s overeating,” he said, “I don’t drink or smoke, but I love food. I couldn’t resist eating, and I mean, I could afford it. I was just eating and eating. Not many people know that a bottle of soda contains more than 32 cubes of sugar.

“I know people who consume two or three bottles a day, which is criminal. I used to eat a lot, but I stopped drinking Coke a long time ago, opting only for water.”

Mr Okupe said he has survived two cancers and that he used to be hypertensive, diabetic and had fatty liver, but overcame those conditions through weight loss and lifestyle changes.

“It was pure carelessness. My dad is not diabetic, my mother is not diabetic, and my grandmother was not diabetic. But because I was grossly obese and I was careless — careless because some five years before I was diagnosed, that’s when I went for my treatment of the cancer of the prostate,” he said.

The former presidential spokesman said he would start a non-governmental organisation on public health

“At 72 I’m not in for any active wahala anymore, but that doesn’t mean that work is going to stop; of course, you don’t retire from politics, I’m not retiring from politics, as soon as I’m on my feet, I’ll be up and about,” he added.
