How we went from celebrating Ruth Osime to mourning Herbert Wigwe, Abimbola Ogunbanjo — Mo Abudu

Filmmaker Mo Abudu has condoled with the families of the late chief executive officer of Access Holdings Plc Herbert Wigwe and the late former group chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Abimbola Ogunbanjo.

Mr Wigwe, wife Chizoba, first son Chizi, and Mr Ogunbanjo died in a helicopter crash in the United States on February 9.

Mo Abudu, in an Instagram post on Tuesday, said they were celebrating former editor of ThisDay Style Magazine Ruth Osime’s 60th birthday when the tragic news broke.

The 59-year-old said they considered cancelling the birthday party but decided to go ahead with the celebration amid the loss of their friends.

She wrote: “Good morning, beautiful people. As I reflect on the past few days, my heart swells with the love we’ve shared amidst both joy and sorrow. Last week, we celebrated the incredible milestone of Ruth Osime’s 60th birthday with a touching church service and a magnificent ladies’ dinner. We danced, sang, and reveled in each other’s company, cherishing the bonds that unite us.

“But amidst our jubilation on Saturday, tragedy struck. The news of Bimbo Ogunbanjo, Herbert Wigwe and his beloved family, being involved in a fatal accident shook us to our core. These were not just acquaintances; they were our friends. In the face of such profound loss, we grappled with uncertainty—should we cancel the celebrations or carry on?

“In the end, we chose to honor Ruth as planned. The outpouring of love and support was overwhelming, a testament to the impact she has had on our lives. Yet, even as we celebrated, our hearts were heavy with grief.”

Mo Abudu in her post, consoled the families and asked God for the grace and courage to deal with their loses.

“We have spent time in prayer and solidarity with the families of the Ogunbanjos and the Wigwes, seeking solace in our shared sorrow.

“Though words fail to mend our shattered hearts, one truth remains steadfast: Bimbo, Herbert, Chizoba, and Chizi will be deeply missed. Their absence leaves a void that can never be filled. In their memory, let us strive to be kinder, to do good, and to live lives worthy of celebration.
