Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has explained how he has managed diabetes for more than 40 years, saying proper diet, regular exercise, medical checkups and healthy living have helped him stay fit at 89.
Mr Obasanjo spoke on Saturday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during the 2026 FirstBank/OBJ Golf Tournament held at Abeokuta Golf Club.
According to him, exercise becomes more important as people grow older.
“One thing you must understand is that exercise is very important at every age, and even more important when you become a senior citizen,” he said.
“I’m officially 89 years old, but by the grace of God, I have been keeping fit and strong despite the fact that I have been diabetic for over 40 years.”
The former president said many people do not take their health seriously enough.
He explained that he follows what he described as the “DREAMS + C” principle.
According to him, “D” stands for diet, “R” for rest, “E” for exercise, “M” for medical checkups and medications, “S” for social interaction, while “C” stands for contentment.
Obasanjo said social interaction was one of the reasons he established a senior citizens club at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, with membership starting from age 70.
He also advised people to avoid over-ambition and focus on realistic goals.
Obasanjo commended FirstBank for supporting the golf tournament over the years, saying the event also promotes unity.
Chief executive officer of FirstBank Group Olusegun Alebiosu praised participants for their discipline and sportsmanship.
Vice chairman of Abeokuta Golf Club and chairman of the organising committee, Oladele Adeniran said the tournament was organised to honour Obasanjo for his contributions to Nigeria and Africa.
