House of Representatives has spoken on the discovery of a decomposed body inside a car at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
Spokesperson of the House, Akin Rotimi, in a statement on Monday, said the clarification followed the official report issued by the Nigeria Police Force, which is leading the investigation.
Mr Rotimi said, “The House of Representatives is clarifying a development concerning the discovery of the body of an unidentified individual around the National Assembly Complex on Sunday, September 7, 2025.
He quoted the Divisional Police Officer of the National Assembly Division, stating that the deceased, believed to be a labourer at a construction site within the complex, was found around 9 a.m. inside the vehicle.
“According to the Divisional Police Officer, National Assembly Division, the deceased, suspected to be a labourer at a construction site within the complex, was found at about 09:00 hours inside a red Peugeot 406 vehicle (Registration No. BWR-577 BF).
“The vehicle was parked outside the Annex Building Gate, close to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
“The body, discovered in a sleeping position on the back seat, was already in an advanced state of decomposition.
“The police have since evacuated the remains to the mortuary and confirmed that efforts are underway to establish the deceased’s identity and notify the family accordingly.”
Police had earlier identified the deceased as 55-year-old Gaddafi Iwar, a Tiv man believed to be a labourer at the construction site.
His body was first taken to the National Assembly Clinic for confirmation before being moved to Asokoro General Hospital, where it was rejected due to decomposition.
Leaders of the Tiv community later took custody of the body and buried it at Gbawu village, a border town between Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and Kuje Area Council.
Akin Rotimi added that the National Assembly is in contact with security and emergency agencies to ensure a thorough investigation.
He commended the police for their response and said the House will continue to monitor developments.
He also conveyed sympathies to the family and associates of the deceased once identified and assured that the public would be updated as the investigation progresses.
