Gridlock as APC shuts down Lagos with campaign flag-off

Commuters and motorists in Lagos State had too much to chew on Tuesday morning when the All Progressives Congress (APC) held its campaign flag-off in Ikeja.

Eyewitnesses report that APC members started gathering at the party’s campaign headquarters early Tuesday morning, a situation that led to massive influx of vehicles and attendant traffic jam.

There were serious gridlocks on roads from the rally arena, spilling on to Ikeja Inside and the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

The situation was compounded by the ongoing roadworks in the axis, which regularly lead to traffic jams at peak hours of the mornings and evenings.

In areas such as the Ikeja Inside by Guinness and the Old Agege Motor Road, officials of the Lagos State Management Authority directed the heavy traffic.

The same was not the case on the federal highway such as the Lagos-Abeokuta Motor Road, however, leading to bedlam as drivers resorted to driving against the traffic.

An exasperated driver, who preferred anonymity, said she spent over three hours on a journey that, ordinarily, should last just about 55 minutes.

The campaign flag-off in Ikeja took a violent turn as gunshots threw the crowd into pandemonium with many stabbed in the process.

Lagosians urge the ruling party and Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to always take road users into consideration when planning any event.
