German clubs condemn racist attack on Balogun, Ujah

German sides, Hannover and Mainz have condemned fans who racially abused Nigerian duo of Leon Balogun and Anthony Ujah during Saturday’s Bundesliga match.

Balogun sat out the entire encounter while his compatriot was unable to influence the scoreline as Hannover won 3-2.

But the game was shamefully marred by racial chants aimed at the pair.

Balogun first brought the attention of the universe to the ugly incidence with his tweet after the encounter.

Mainz affirmed the abuse and have contacted “the relevant authorities”.

Hannover, meanwhile, said, “racism has no place in football or society.”

“It was a mindless act of a few individuals that we do not accept as part of our community of Hannover,” Hannover’s statement said, following their 3-2 win over Mainz at the HDI-Arena.

“They have nothing in common with the values for which our club has long stood for. We have already set in motion and will do everything possible to identify those so that such a shameful incident cannot be repeated.

“We are grateful for any hints that help to identify these people. You’re right, Leon: there should not be room for racism in any corner of the world – and that’s our very clear statement!”

Balogun, 29, made five appearances as Nigeria secured a spot at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Ujah meanwhile, who hasn’t played for his country since 2014, rejoined Mainz for a second spell last month from Chinese club, Liaoning Whowin.
