Former Kano State governor Abdullahi Ganduje has referred to Muhammad Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano.
Mr Ganduje made the remark on Tuesday at the Government House in Kano during the swearing-in of the new deputy governor Murtala Garo.
While speaking, he greeted Emir Sanusi and addressed him as chairman of the Kano State Council of Emirs.
The reference marks the first time Ganduje has publicly acknowledged Sanusi in that role since he removed him as emir in March 2020 while serving as governor.
Sanusi was installed as the 14th Emir of Kano in 2014. He was removed by Ganduje after a dispute between both men during the former governor’s administration.
At the time, the state government said the removal followed allegations of disobedience to government directives and failure to attend official meetings.
Ganduje later said Sanusi did not align with changes to the emirate system introduced by his administration.
Sanusi was reinstated as emir after the election of Governor Abba Yusuf in 2023.
His reinstatement followed the repeal of the emirate law that had created additional emirates in the state.
Since his return, Sanusi has resumed his role as Emir of Kano and chairman of the state council of emirs.
