Federation Cup: Akwa United advance as Rangers crash out

Nigeria Federation Cup holders, Akwa United, continued their quest towards retaining the title after beating Sunshine Stars on Tuesday evening.

The Promise Keepers saw-off the Akure Gunners 8-7 on penalties at the Aper Aku Stadium, home of Lobi Stars, same club they defeated en route to winning their first domestic title.

Substitute, Bassey Akpan, was the hero for Akwa after replacing injured first choice goalkeeper, Olufemi Kayode.

With the game tied at goalless after normal time, the goalkeeping prowess of Akpan was instrumental in deciding who won the shootout.

Akwa skipper, Otorobong Effiong, converted the winning penalty kick after Akpan made a stunning save to give his side the advantage.

Coach Maurice Cooreman tutored side thus advances to the last eight of the oldest club competition in Nigeria.

But it was an opposite tale for Enugu Rangers, who were knocked out by Nigeria National League club side, Crown FC.

The Flying Antelopes who alongside Wiki Tourist, are joint top of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), suffered a humiliating 2-1 loss Crown at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna.

The Ajilete Boys scored the opener in the 23rd minute through Peter Michael.

Shortly after Rangers got the equaliser mid-way into the second half, the Osogbo-based Crown had the last laugh in the 78th minute courtesy of Waheed Bello’s stunner.
