FCMB manager commits suicide over bad loan

A manager with First City Monument Bank (FCMB), Olisa Nwakoby, fatally shot himself on Friday in the presence of a clergyman in the Lekki area of Lagos.

The father of a 10-year-old daughter allegedly took his own life because of a toxic loan he approved for an unnamed customer.

Sources say the tragic banker authorised the controversial loan of about N350million which the beneficiary could not service and the bank was putting pressure on him to produce the money plus interest.

New Telegraph quotes a source as saying fear over his integrity and the name of his family, which could be dented if his bank commences action against him over the loan, prompted the Abia State University graduate to take his own life.

The newspaper reports that Nwakoby, on the fateful day, confessed to his pastor that what he would do in the next few minutes would shock everyone.

He promptly shot himself.

“It was later discovered that he took money from the bank, N350million, and the money started creating problems for him. He killed himself,” a source said.

Homicide detectives attached to Area J Command, Lekki/Ajah have begun investigation into the case.

The FCMB manager’s father, the late Chief Oguejiofor Nwakoby, was a former chairman of First Bank of Nigeria.
