Former Lagos governors Babatunde Fashola and Akinwunmi Ambode joined Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday as the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) publicly declared its support for President Bola Tinubu to seek a second term in 2027.
The decision came at the APC stakeholders forum held at Eko Hotels and Suites, where hundreds of party members, leaders and loyalists gathered to endorse the president.
The event was attended by key figures, including Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and his wife, Oluremi; Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa; members of the APC National and State Working Committees; lawmakers; council chairmen; and traditional, religious, and youth leaders.
The motion to endorse President Tinubu for another term was moved by the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, and seconded by Speaker Obasa. Both men praised the president’s performance in office and urged Lagos APC members to mobilise support for his re-election.
Governor Sanwo-Olu said Tinubu had fulfilled many of his campaign promises and deserved the party’s full backing.
“Our president, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was once the 12th governor of Lagos State. We have listened to all of our stakeholders here today, and all have come to the conclusion that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should return as our president in 2027,” he said.
He added that the resolution reflected the collective will of Lagos APC members and expressed confidence that the message would reach the president.
In his remarks, Deputy Governor Hamzat described Tinubu’s administration as one marked by “courage, vision, and commitment to national transformation.” He called for continuity, saying the country’s progress depended on building on the gains already achieved.
“As loyal members of the APC family in Lagos State, we endorse and support the leadership at the federal level for a second term,” he said. “Let us mobilise, sensitise, and encourage others to stand firmly behind our leaders, confident that the continuity of progressive leadership will bring even greater prosperity to our people.”
Hamzat also highlighted the achievements of the Sanwo-Olu administration, noting that the THEMES+ agenda had transformed Lagos across multiple sectors.
“Lagos stands tall as a model of excellence and a beacon of good governance,” he said.
Delivering a lecture titled “Voter Apathy and the Sanctity of Election in Nigeria’s Budding Democracy,” Mr Fashola urged party members to engage citizens, especially the youth, to participate in elections.
“Political party participation is based on enthusiasm. If people are enthusiastic, they will turn out to vote,” he said.
The forum also featured speeches by federal cabinet members and lawmakers, who listed some of President Tinubu’s achievements in various sectors since taking office on May 29, 2023.
