Family releases burial arrangements for Newswatch co-founder Dan Agbese

The family of Dan Agbese, journalist and co-founder of Newswatch magazine, has released the burial programme following his death on Monday, November 17.

He died at 81.

His death was announced in a statement issued by the Agbese family of the Ikpilogwu clan in Agila district, Ado Local Government Area of Benue State.

“We hereby announce the death of our husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and mentor: Chief Dan Agbese, the Awan’Otun of Agila,” the statement said.

“Chief Agbese transited to eternal glory this morning, Monday, November 17, 2025. He was aged 81.”

Agbese was one of the founders of Newswatch magazine.

He previously served as editor of The Nigeria Standard and New Nigerian newspapers and later as general manager of Radio Benue, Makurdi.

He authored several books and wrote weekly columns in national newspapers, including Daily Trust and The Guardian.

Until his death, he worked as a media consultant alongside Ray Ekpu, Yakubu Muhammed and Soji Akinrinade.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Agbese, six children and seven grandchildren.

The family has scheduled a celebration of life ceremony for Monday, December 15, at Whitestone Event Place, Billingsway, Oregun, Lagos.

The event will begin at 1:30 p.m.
