FA Cup: Martial strike earns United replay at West Ham ‎

Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial netted an 83rd-minute equaliser as Manchester United came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with West Ham United in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Dimitri Payet had sent the visitors into a second-half lead at Old Trafford, but Martial netted seven minutes from time to leave the pair needing a replay to determine who marches on to the semi-finals.

With heavyweights, Arsenal and Chelsea already eliminated in the last eight, United on paper looked like potential champions.

But the Red Devils have to settle for a replay in East London against the Hammers who showed more character and determination in the game.

United captain, Michael Carrick, thinks his side deserves a draw against “good side” West Ham but admits more work needs to be done.

Louis Van Gaal’s men face Liverpool in the second leg of their Europa League last-16 tie before the Manchester derby on Sunday and Carrick has urged his team- mates to finish the season strongly.

“We went behind to a terrific free-kick, you can’t do much about that, but we deserved to get back into the game,” he said.

“We were creating pressure but getting shots on goal was lacking and we need to improve.

“West Ham are a good team and have some terrific talent. It is an even game and we will go down there thinking we can get through.

“We have big games coming up, so we have to be ready and finish the season strongly.”
