An explosion in Magamin Diddi village, Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State has killed seven teenage girls.

A native of the area Faruku Magami told the news media that the deceased were among nine girls who went to a nearby bush to fetch firewood.

Mr Faruku explained that the girls saw an object drop on the ground, and out of curiosity they wanted to open it when suddenly it exploded.

“Seven out of the nine girls died on the spot and the remaining two escaped with some injuries,” Faruku said.

Commissioner for security and home affairs Abubakar Dauran said the victims went to the bush in search of firewood when they picked an explosive device and began playing with it, and shortly after, it exploded.

“Six were said to have died instantly, while others who sustained various degrees of injuries were immediately rushed to a hospital in Gusau, the state capital for medical attention,” he said.

Mr Dauran further explained that another girl had also died in the hospital, bringing the number of the girls killed to seven.
