Exclusive: Kemi Adetiba working on new film, The King is Coming

Kemi Adetiba

For those thinking Kemi Adetiba is in a corner sulking about somebody else directing The Wedding Party 2, Qed.ng can reveal that the 37-year-old will announce a new film project soon.

This online news medium was authoritatively informed on Wednesday that the working title of the new production is The King is Coming.

The revelation came a day after producers of The Wedding Party revealed that they had begun shooting of a sequel to the hit rom-com.

It was also disclosed that Niyi Akinmolayan has taken over from Adetiba as director.

That came as a surprise to many because of the plaudits the director received for the manner she brought the best out of the many star actors and extras in the first instalment.

And contrary to media reports that Adetiba was axed by Mo Abudu, one of the executive producers of the film, a source close to the director told Qed.ng that “it was just time for her to move on”.

On why she has not announced her new project, the source said “Kemi is just keeping everything low for now. She wanted them to announce their project (The Wedding Party 2) first.

“To be honest, she got a chance at a huge opportunity that didn’t coincide with The Wedding Party timeline but it was time to do something else.”

Adetiba, whose works have appeared on Channel O, MTV Base, Soundcity, BET and Netflix, started out professionally as a radio presenter with Rhythm 93.7 FM before transiting to television.

She made a name as a music video and television director before landing a film debut with The Wedding Party which opened the City to City spotlight on Lagos at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September, 2016.

The film premiered in Nigeria on 26 November 2016 at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos and has gone on to make over N450million at the Nigerian box office.

King Women, an interview-based web series featuring powerful women by the New York Film Academy alumnus is currently running on Accelerate TV.

On the synopsis, cast, crew and location of her forthcoming film, the source concluded, “The project is still ongoing. It will be revealed soon”.
