George Emefiele, brother of the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria Godwin Emefiele, has condemned the Department of State Services (DSS) for fighting officials of the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Ikoyi, Lagos over custody of Emefiele.

DSS operatives clashed with prison officials on Tuesday over custody of Emefiele after he was arraigned at the Federal High Court in Lagos and granted bail in the sum of N20 million by Justice Nicholas Oweibo.

The judge had ordered that Emefiele should be moved from DSS custody and remanded at a correctional centre pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions.

Emefiele was arraigned on a two-count charge of unauthorised possession of firearms and ammunition.

After the face-off with prison officials within the court premises, Emefiele was re-arrested by the DSS.

Reacting to the clash, Emefiele’s brother told reporters at the court premises that it is a disgrace to Nigeria.

“It’s unfortunate that this is happening in Nigeria, a democratic nation, a nation that is blessed with people with integrity.

“I remember very well when I was in secondary school, the NADECO period, I knew how the current president fought the military to obey constitutional law. Here we are today, three courts have said ‘release him on bail’. He’s not running away for God’s sake. He has served this nation for nine years. Where is he going to go?

“You can imagine a situation where two Federal Government establishments are fighting themselves, manhandling the commander of (Ikoyi) prison. It is a disgrace to this nation,” he said.
