EKOIFF: How Nigerian girls won $100,000 international technology competition

CodeGirl, a documentary about four Nigerian high school students who won an international technology competition opened the Eko International Film Festival (EKOIFF) in Lagos on Monday.

Produced and directed by Leslie Chilcott, CodeGirl tells the story of Praise David-Oku, Sonam Kumar, Nmesoma Ogbonna, and Grace Akpoiroro who developed a mobile app to tackle real issues affecting the society they live in.

In the documentary which was officially released in November, 2015, six groups emerge as finalists in the “Technovation Challenge” and are given the opportunity to pitch their ideas to judges.

Team Charis from Nigeria, Team WoCo from USA, Team X-Women from India, Team Puppy sized Elephants from  USA, Team PortMund from Brazil and Team Ameka from USA all have great ideas, but the Nigerians win $10,000 for their ingenuous app called ‘Discardious’ which they hope will help clean up their community.
