Ekiti Methodist priest planned fake kidnap for months – Wife

Wife of a Methodist Church priest, Peter Adewuyi, who was arrested recently for faking his kidnap to extort money from the church, has said that her husband planned his kidnap for months.

Rebecca Adewuyi told curious church members that she had been discouraging her husband from executing the plan two months before the incident.

Head of youths in the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Ijan road diocese, Ekiti, Idowu Atofarati, told The Nation on Sunday that church leaders visited the priest’s wife to question her about the incident.

Mrs Atofarati quoted the priest’s wife saying: “I had always been stopping him from doing that in the past.”

The youth leader said Mrs Adewuyi blamed the devil for her inability to stop her husband from executing the fake kidnap.

The 31-year-old priest reportedly booked a hotel room in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, and hid from public view from where he and his accomplice, Sunday Adewole, made calls to the members of the public to pay ransom for his release.

Adewole was said to have made a demand of N3 million as ransom.

The Methodist priest was tracked to a location near FirstBank in Okeyinmi area of Ado-Ekiti where he went to pick the ransom.

The priest and his accomplice are said to be in detention at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) of Ekiti police headquarters.
