Eight nominations for Nigeria at CAF Awards

With eight nominations, Nigeria lead other countries in a shortlist released by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Monday.

The West African giant once again proved its dominance in the round leather game with multiple nominations in several categories.

After winning a record fifth FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile, the Golden Eaglets are in line to be crowned the National Team of the Year.

However the Eaglets will have to overcome another Nigerian side, Dream Team VI, for the accolade.

Samson Siasia’s lad defeated Algeria 2-1 last week to clinch the CAF U-23 AFCON and also qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympic.

U-17 World Cup-winning coach, Emmanuel Amuneke, was shortlisted for the Coach of the Year category.

Joining Amuneke are two of his youngsters – record- breaking goalscorer, Victor Osimhen, and most outstanding player, Kelechi Nwakali.

The duo face-off for the Youth Player of the Year award after impressing en route to winning the cadet world cup.

For the Most Promising Talent in Africa, top scorer at the just concluded CAF U-23 AFCON, Etebo Oghenekaro, and skipper, Azubuike Okechukwu, are nominated.

In the Women’s Player of the Year category, Super Falcons’ Ngozi Ebere made the final cut with immediate past winner, Asisat Oshoala, conspicuously missing.

The award holds on January 7, 2016 in Abuja, Nigeria.
