DSS invites cattle dealers over food blockade to southern Nigeria

The Department of State Services (DSS) has invited for questioning the leadership of cattle and foodstuff dealers under the aegis of Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria (AUFCDN).

The invitation comes against the backdrop of a nationwide strike which the union began last Thursday to demand protection of its members, and payment of N475 billion compensation for lives of members and property lost during the #EndSARS protest and the Shasa market crisis in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

The group is also demanding the dismantling of all roadblocks on federal highways where its members are allegedly harassed and extorted by security operatives.

At a press briefing on Monday, AUFCDN general secretary Ahmed Alaramma said the association’s president Mohammed Tahir was with the DSS.

Mr Alaramma said the military were intimidating the union’s members and task force, adding that the Federal Government should avert looming chaos by stopping the intimidation of its members.

Butchers in the south who still have stock have capitalised on the strike to hike prices. Dealers in perishable food items shipped from the north have also leveraged it.
